Liz Truss became the prime minister after defeating the former chancellor Rishi Sunak in the conservative leadership contest.

  • Liz Truss, the third woman Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher, took an oath of allegiance to the Crown with Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
  • Truss, also the foreign secretary for the past year, defeated rival Rishi Sunak with 81,326 votes to 60,399.
  • Boris Johnson, who was forced to resign, lauded his achievements and did not mention failures in his term speech at the oath ceremony.
